For so long I felt I was on the outside. I grew up with the best friends you could imagine. But I was always the Makah boy on the Quileute reservation. It wasn’t really until high school I realised this actually mattered to some people. After I joined the pack and I found out I belonged to one of three bloodline things got tense for me. Two of my best friend’s father’s might be mine and I couldn’t even talk to them about it. Or the other possibility… my Alpha’s dead beat Dad could be mine. Because of this Sam warned me to keep away from them; he was worried I would lose my temper in school.

The more Spirit Warriors that joined the pack the more people talked about whether or not Jake’s father was mine, but denied it because it would have meant he cheated on his wife. Even though the idea of Billy as a cheater was at odds with everything I knew about him, it still permanently changed the bond I had with a man I’d grown to depend on. In fact all three men that could possibly be my father were married when my Mom was pregnant. Learning that these rumours were true was one of the hardest things I ever faced. But in time I realised that one mistake didn’t make her any less the woman I knew, the one that raised me alone, gave me the gift and passion for music; that grounded me in every part of my life.

After our face-off with the Vampire-Royals things at home got rough with my Mom. They had been deteriorating as soon as I joined the pack, because I had to lie a lot about where I was and what I was doing. In my attempt to get out of the house and try to salvage my relationship with my mom, I made some really bad decisions. The only people that know the truth about it are Jacob and Leah (@HotHeadSheWolf).

Shortly after my Mother got sick and a tragedy on the Rez I pulled my act together. But she continued getting sicker and sicker until she was diagnosed with kidney failure; a woman who you might see with a glass of wine in her hand at a wedding… or two at a girl’s night in with Sue Clearwater and Patrick Swayze movies. Now, I spend my life with a hospital beeper in my pocket waiting for someone else to die so that my mother can live.

But through all that darkness came a light from the most unsuspecting of places. Leah. She and her family stuck by us, but Leah… the care she showed and the steps she took to keep us from drowning… she helped me stay afloat for long enough to look up and really see her. The hidden parts of her became clearer; her stunning good looks became this incredible beauty that I couldn’t believe I’d not seen in all these years. She was so much more than what anyone ever knew. She trusted me to walk a hidden path with her. I glimpsed behind the walls she’d built, and she didn’t kill me.
